President Trump’s threat to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is sending ripples through financial markets. Coupled with ongoing trade tensions and fears of a slowdown, investors are reassessing their positions. Also the confidence that once underpinned the U.S. dollar and Treasury market is starting to fray.
The Federal Reserve’s independence has long been a foundation of investor trust in the U.S. economy. Now, that independence appears to be under fire. President Trump’s repeated criticism of Jerome Powell and efforts to find a legal route to fire him are alarming investors worldwide.
Michael Gusay, Chief Investment Officer of Global Fixed Income at Principal Asset Management, warns that such a move will have an effect. Even if hypothetical, it could have damaging consequences. “If the Fed’s independence comes into question and is realised, that would further erode confidence in U.S. dollar assets.
Typically, during periods of political and economic uncertainty, investors flock to safe assets like U.S. Treasuries and the dollar. But this time is different. Both have been selling off in tandem as investors weigh the consequences of weakened Fed independence and erratic policy signals from Washington. The bond market, long seen as a reliable haven, is flashing warning signs. With rising term premiums and a steepening yield curve, the cracks are beginning to show in the foundation of investor confidence.
When Will the Real Impact Be Felt?
While soft data already hints at trouble ahead, Gusay predicts that we may begin seeing hard data reflect this downturn as early as May. Companies are issuing earnings with little to no forward guidance—a sign of growing uncertainty in boardrooms across the country. This delay in data makes it more difficult for the Fed to act swiftly, despite being committed to a data-dependent approach. Meanwhile, markets remain jittery as they anticipate the next economic signal.
