Google has officially integrated the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) into its search engine, marking a significant advancement in the accessibility of cryptocurrency data. Through this integration, users can now search for .eth domains and view corresponding Ethereum (ETH) balances directly in search results, eliminating the need to visit external blockchain explorers.

This development represents a pivotal step in Google’s broader strategy to support blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, following earlier features like ETH wallet tracking and celebrations of blockchain events.

Expanding ENS Support and Google’s Blockchain Features

Google first rolled out the ENS search feature to a select group of users but has now made it available to everyone globally. According to Nalin, a Web3 official at Google, the integration also extends to Ethereum faucets on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks. Users can now input their .eth address and receive test ETH “drips” seamlessly through this system.

Moreover, ENS took another step forward by partnering with GoDaddy earlier this year. This collaboration enables users to link their .eth names to traditional Web2 domains at no extra cost, thereby lowering the financial barriers, such as high gas fees, that previously hindered wider adoption.

ENS works similarly to traditional internet domain names, offering users a simpler way to share wallet addresses by converting long Ethereum wallet strings into readable names, such as yourname.eth.

Google Goes Crypto

Google’s blockchain support began with the integration of Ethereum addresses into its search engine in May 2023. This feature enabled users to search for Ethereum wallet addresses and instantly view ETH balances. By March 2024, Google expanded this support to ENS domains, allowing searches for addresses like Vitalik.eth, with results showing ETH balances, wallet addresses, and recent transactions from Etherscan.

These efforts build on Google’s previous initiatives, including the introduction of ETH wallet tracking in 2022 and celebrating the Ethereum Merge with special features. The platform’s 2023 update to its crypto advertising policy, allowing cryptocurrency ETFs to appear in relevant searches, highlights Google’s continued commitment to advancing blockchain and cryptocurrency services.
