Key Takeaways:

  • Avalanche’s TVL has fallen nearly 50% from its yearly peak.
  • Stablecoin outflows point to declining on-chain activity.
  • A recovery depends on renewed DeFi usage and capital inflows.

A headline calling $444.6 million “secured” sounds like good news. The chart underneath it tells a different story — this figure is the tail end of a decline that’s cut Avalanche’s DeFi footprint by nearly half over the past several months.

MSB Intel reported on August 6, 2026 that Avalanche now holds $444.6 million in total value locked across its DeFi protocols. AVAX trades at $6.45, down 3.0% over the past 24 hours.

A Decline That’s Been Building for Months

The chart accompanying this update puts the number in context: Avalanche’s TVL peaked near $856.2 million earlier in the year before grinding down to its current $444.6 million level — a drop of roughly 48%. That decline hasn’t been a single event but a steady bleed.

Trackers following the network’s DeFi metrics through June recorded consecutive monthly readings showing TVL falling from the $600-$630 million range down toward $460-$470 million, with each report noting DEX trading volume contracting even faster than locked value, in some cases nearly double the rate of the TVL decline itself.

Stablecoins Have Been Leaving Too

The TVL contraction hasn’t happened in isolation. USDT supply on Avalanche fell more than 20% between May and June alone, dropping from over $530 million to roughly $370 million — a decline analysts flagged as real capital outflow rather than a mark-to-market effect, since dollar-pegged stablecoin balances don’t move with token price swings the way TVL figures can. Total USD-pegged stablecoins on the network still sit well above the DeFi TVL figure, suggesting dollar liquidity hasn’t fully exited Avalanche, but a shrinking share of it is being deployed into the chain’s protocols.

The Chart Behind Today’s Snapshot

Looking at the 24-hour chart, AVAX spent most of the session trading in a tight band near $6.65 to $6.70, before a sharp drop around midday pulled price down to roughly $6.40. It has since recovered modestly to $6.45, still down 3.0% for the day. That drop lines up closely with the timing of this TVL update, though a single day’s price move is rarely driven by one data point in isolation.

Avalanche Isn’t Alone, But That’s Cold Comfort

Some context softens the picture without erasing it. DeFi-wide TVL fell roughly 39% across the entire market in 2026, driven by weaker token prices, cooling yield demand, and a broader risk-off shift — with high-profile exploits at protocols like Drift and KelpDAO accelerating outflows industry-wide. Ethereum’s own DeFi base dropped 43% over the same period.

But not every chain lost ground: Tron grew TVL roughly 5% on stablecoin settlement strength, and Hyperliquid rose about 7% on perpetuals trading. That a handful of networks managed to grow while Avalanche continued shrinking suggests the decline isn’t purely a market-wide phenomenon Avalanche is simply riding out.
