Block to Enable Bitcoin Payments on Square by 2026, Says Jack Dorsey

Bitcoin Integration Coming to Square via Lightning Network

Jack Dorsey’s fintech company, Block, Inc., has revealed plans to enable BTC payments through Square, its popular payment processing platform. The feature was announced at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas on May 27 and is expected to begin rolling out in the latter half of 2025, with a full launch targeted for 2026—pending regulatory approval.

The new system will allow merchants using Square to accept Bitcoin via the Lightning Network, which facilitates fast, low-cost transactions. Merchants will have the flexibility to either retain the BTC or have it automatically converted to fiat currency in real time. The integration builds on Square’s existing Bitcoin Conversions feature, which already enables merchants to convert a portion of their sales to BTC.

“This gives merchants more economic freedom and choice in how they receive payments,” said Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block. The process will be simple for consumers—just a quick scan of a QR code, with Square and Lightning handling the backend.

Bitkey Enhancements and Stake n’ Shake’s Bitcoin Push

Alongside the payment rollout, Block is also upgrading Bitkey, its self-custody BTC wallet introduced in late 2023. Beginning in May, new security and privacy features will be added to improve accessibility while eliminating the need for traditional seed phrases.

In related news, American fast-food chain Stake n’ Shake is embracing BTC as well. Dan Edwards, the company’s chief operating officer, told attendees at Bitcoin 2025 that switching to Bitcoin payments has cut their processing fees in half. Stake n’ Shake began accepting BTC globally across all locations on May 16.
