Despite the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, new research shows that AI systems still struggle with the real-world tasks humans handle every day. From freelance projects to problem-solving and basic reasoning, AI often looks impressive on the surface—but consistently fails where true understanding is required.

AI Falls Apart on Real Freelance Jobs

A recent study by Scale AI and the Center for AI Safety tested six leading AI models on 240 genuine Upwork assignments. These tasks represented everyday freelance jobs—writing, data analysis, design, planning, and more.

The results were clear: AI completed only 3% of the work.

The top-performing model earned just $1,810 out of $143,991 worth of available project payments. Others delivered even less. The biggest issue? AI cannot manage:

  • Multi-step workflows
  • Tasks requiring initiative
  • Real judgment calls
  • Adapting to unexpected changes

This aligns with MIT research showing that 95% of companies saw zero measurable return after pouring billions into AI experimentation.

Why the Human Mind Still Wins

AI excels at pattern prediction—but humans excel at understanding.

Discover why AI struggles with real‑world tasks—despite all the hype.

A large study using 129 tasks across 43 interactive environments found that frontier AI models failed repeatedly at challenges requiring:

  • Planning toward a goal
  • Updating beliefs based on new evidence
  • Predicting hidden information
  • Navigating changing rules

Meanwhile, 517 human participants performed near-perfectly, thanks to natural intuition, real-world memory, and the ability to explore problems creatively.

AI Fact-Checking and Decision-Making Still Struggle

Another joint analysis by the BBC and European Broadcasting Union revealed that major AI tools—including ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity—got 45% of news-related answers wrong. The issues ranged from incorrect sourcing to hallucinated details.

AI-generated cover letters are also disrupting hiring processes. Research on Freelancer.com shows they blur the line between genuine effort and spam, making top-skilled applicants 19% less likely to be selected.
