Wood Secures EPC Contract for Shell’s Prelude FLNG

Wood has secured a six-year contract to deliver brownfield engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCm) solutions for Shell’s Prelude Floating Liquified Natural Gas (FLNG) facility located in Western Australia.

Ken Gilmartin, CEO of Wood, emphasized the importance of LNG as a transition fuel that balances global energy security with the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

He noted that this agreement builds on Wood’s 70-year partnership with Shell, reinforcing Wood’s reputation as a leader in brownfield engineering within Australia.

Prelude FLNG: A Floating Giant
The Prelude FLNG facility is the world’s largest floating offshore gas installation, measuring 488 meters in length and 74 meters in width.

Positioned offshore, north-northeast of Broome, Prelude is designed to extract, liquefy, and store natural gas at sea before transferring it to ships for delivery to customers.
The facility is engineered to stay moored at its location for at least 25 years.Supporting Prelude’s operations are three infield support vessels that handle security surveillance, emergency standby, and product transfer.

Additionally, multi-purpose supply vessels provide further transport and logistical support from Darwin, which houses necessary equipment and spare parts.

Expanding LNG Operations in Australia
Shell is also advancing its operations on the opposite side of the continent. The Crux natural gas field, which will be managed remotely from Prelude, represents a long-term backfill opportunity for Shell.

In Queensland’s Western Downs region, Shell’s QGC business is initiating the development of 138 new onshore natural gas wells aimed at supplying both domestic and export markets.

These efforts underscore Shell’s commitment to expanding its LNG infrastructure and securing energy resources to meet global demand while addressing environmental concerns, with Wood playing a crucial role in these developments.
