Tempo: Stripe and Paradigm’s New Blockchain for Global Payments

Stripe and Paradigm have unveiled Tempo, a new blockchain designed to support stablecoins and real-world payments. Matt Huang, co-founder of Paradigm, described it as “purpose-built for stablecoins and real-world payments,” signaling a strong push toward next-generation financial infrastructure.

Stripe’s Legacy Meets Paradigm’s Crypto Expertise

Stripe, valued at $91.5 billion, is one of the most influential payment processors in the world, operating across 51 countries and handling over 135 currencies. Nearly 90% of U.S. adults have used a business powered by Stripe without necessarily realizing it. Founded in 2010 by John and Patrick Collison through Y Combinator, Stripe quickly became one of the accelerator’s greatest success stories, raising more than $1.6 billion and becoming a cornerstone of digital payments.

Paradigm, on the other hand, is a leading crypto-focused venture capital firm established in 2018 by Matt Huang, a Sequoia Capital veteran, and Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam. With assets under management estimated between $9–13 billion and its latest $850 million fund closing in June 2024, Paradigm has consistently backed transformative projects in the crypto industry.

Tempo: A Payments-First Blockchain

By combining Stripe’s global reach in payments with Paradigm’s deep expertise in crypto, the two firms aim to create a blockchain specifically tailored for the mainstream adoption of stablecoins. Currently in testnet, Tempo is positioned as a “payments-first blockchain” that could rival established players like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana in the payments arena.

Huang emphasized that as stablecoins move toward mainstream adoption, infrastructure optimized for speed, efficiency, and real-world use cases is essential. With Tempo, Stripe and Paradigm seek to deliver exactly that—an ecosystem where stablecoins and payment processing converge seamlessly. If successful, Tempo could redefine the way digital money moves globally, unlocking new possibilities for businesses and consumers alike.
