Cryptocurrency ATMs Hit Record-Breaking Number in 2021, as Crypto Adoption Peaks

2021 saw a significant spike in cryptocurrency ATMs across the globe, with over 20,000 new machine installations since December 2020. Interestingly, the newly-added machines are more than all the crypto teller machines that have existed in the past seven years.

Installation growth chart by Coin ATM Radar showed that the total number of all Bitcoin ATMs registered between October 2013 and
December 2020 was fewer than 13,000.

According to new data from the analytics provider, the total number of crypto teller machines neared 34,000 at the end of 2021.

Cryptocurrency ATMs Heavily Concentrated in North America

While crypto ATMs are situated across the globe, they remain heavily concentrated in North America. Statistics show that 30,000 or about 90% of all Bitcoin ATMs (BATMs) are operating in the US, while Canada accounts for roughly 2,200 machines.

Interestingly, Bitcoin-loving El-Salvador takes the third position with 205 teller machines, ahead of Spain and Austria, with only 200 and 142 ATMs, respectively. As of Wednesday, the whole of Europe has only 1,384 BATMs, significantly lower than the numbers from North America.

Meanwhile, several companies also broke into the crypto-teller machine industry this year. The biggest crypto-teller machine company is Genesis Coin, with about 14,000 devices. Coming in second place is General Bytes with over 7,500 machines, and Bitaccess in third place with roughly 5,000 devices. In the fourth and fifth positions are Coinsource and Bitstop, with about 2,000 machines each.

These crypto teller machines support several crypto assets and are either one-way (withdraw or buy coins only) or two-way devices (deposit and withdraw or buy and sell coins).

Most BATMs support the purchase and sale of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum, ETH, Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), and many more.
