Blockchain has revolutionized financial systems by promoting transparency and reducing the role of intermediaries. However, blockchain networks have their limitations as closed systems. To address this issue, oracles offer external data to closed networks.

Oracles act as intermediaries between decentralized networks and external data sources, such as web APIs, databases, IoT sensors, and other networks. They offer secure and decentralized methods, bringing off-chain data onto the blockchain and providing it for smart contracts and other dapps. One of their primary functions is to confirm the accuracy and authenticity of this data.

Oracles are vital for many blockchain platforms that require interaction with external data exchanges, particularly in decentralized finance. Oracles provide price feeds by sourcing data from external exchanges, help manage assets like loans, collateral, and derivatives, monitor these sources, and send signals to the smart contract.

The Oracle sector took a significant hit throughout the crypto winter of 2022, with LINK, BAND, and API3 losing over 70% in value, while RLC lost over 60% of its market cap. However, the rebound of the crypto economy in 2023 has helped the Oracle sector, with all key players showing signs of recovery. In the first two months of the year, RLC and API3 have gained over 55%, while BAND and LINK have increased by 45% and 33%, respectively.

Despite the major sell-offs during the crypto winter, the oracle sector has been rewarding for those who invested three years ago. LINK, RLC, and BAND have gained 307%, 386%, and 778%, respectively, since 2020, beating traditional assets by a significant margin. During its peak in 2021, BAND’s 16-month return hit a staggering 9,000%.

While the Oracle ecosystem is still a narrow market, there is much demand for the technology, and investors may want to take advantage of exposure to its protocols. Although LINK still dominates the Oracle space, other players like API3, with its unique model, have the potential to succeed. Additionally, smaller players have more room to grow from their current sizes, providing better returns.
