Dow Jones futures edged lower on Tuesday, reflecting market caution as investors weighed the growing risk of a potential U.S. government shutdown and its impact on upcoming economic data.
Futures Under Pressure Ahead of Jobs Data
During European trading hours, Dow Jones futures fell 0.18% to 46,500, while S&P 500 futures dropped 0.19% to 6,700. The Nasdaq 100 futures also slipped 0.21%, trading below 24,800.
The weakness in futures comes as traders brace for the possibility that the highly anticipated September Nonfarm Payrolls report could be delayed if lawmakers fail to reach a funding agreement. The uncertainty also casts a shadow over other key releases this week, including job openings, private payrolls, and the ISM manufacturing PMI.
Shutdown Standoff in Washington
Congressional leaders once again failed to secure a deal on Monday, leaving the U.S. government on the brink of a funding freeze. President Donald Trump has warned of federal job cuts if a shutdown occurs, a move that would further disrupt government operations and dampen investor confidence.
Wall Street Opened Strong on AI Rebound
Despite futures weakness, Wall Street kicked off the week with gains on Monday, driven by a rebound in artificial intelligence stocks.
- Dow Jones: +0.15%
- S&P 500: +0.26%
- Nasdaq: +0.48%
Tech leaders led the rally, with Nvidia up 2.1%, AMD gaining 1.2%, and Micron Technology jumping 4.2%.
New Tariffs Add to Uncertainty
Adding another layer of market risk, President Trump signed a proclamation on Monday imposing:
- 10% tariff on lumber imports
- 25% tariff on vanities, kitchen cabinets, and upholstered wooden products
The new tariffs are set to take effect on October 14, according to Reuters.
